A Spectacular Heritage
The Blackpool Illuminations began in 1879 as the UK's first ever public electric light display with just eight carbon arc lamps. What started as a pioneering experiment has grown into one of the world's most iconic light festivals.
Today, the illuminations stretch for six magnificent miles along the promenade, featuring everything from traditional displays to cutting-edge digital technology. The 2025 season runs from the Switch On night until 4th January 2026.
The Switch On ceremony tradition began in 1934, and since then, countless celebrities have had the honour of flicking the famous switch, including members of the Royal Family, pop stars, and television personalities.
